Sir Bobby Robson

Sir Bobby Robson, 18 February 1933 – 31 July 2009

Sir Bobby Robson - one of the greatest of football men - sadly passed away at his home in County Durham this morning, aged 76 years of age.

Just five days ago Sir Bobby made what was to be his final public appearance, fittingly at St James' Park, where he was attending a football match in support of his own cancer charity.

Sir Bobby managed the England national team for eight years including the 1986 and 1990 World Cups in Mexico and Italy. The dignity in defeat that Sir Bobby demonstrated upon controversial defeat to Argentina in '86 and the heartbreak of a semi final penalty defeat to West Germany in '90 spoke volumes for the man and was an example to us all.

At club level, Sir Bobby was a rarity - an English manager who managed abroad: PSV, Barcelona, Porto and Benfica. In England he was in charge at Ipswich Town and his home town club Newcastle United, having managed Fulham for several months in 1968, where he was at that time a senior player, before continuing his playing career at West Bromwich Albion. Sir Bobby appeared on 20 occasions for the England national team.

Sir Bobby Robson was a great man.
